A redan is a fortification consisting of two parallel faces set at a 60 to 120-degree angle. Smaller versions, known as fleches, were also used. They were often used to secure fortified positions during World War I. A traditional Redan has a bunker on the front left, a second bunker behind the shoulder, and a green with a sloping shoulder in the back. This design forces players to take the ball away from the hole rather than toward it.
